Two creators can post the same video with the same words. One gets people watching to the end, the other loses them in the first seconds. Often the difference is how the captions look.
A good caption style does three jobs. It is easy to read at a glance, it matches the mood of the video, and it keeps the eye moving. This guide gives you a simple way to choose one.
Start with readability
Before anything else, check that your text can be read on a small screen, outdoors, in one second.
- Size. Use large text. If you have to lean in to read it, it is too small.
- Weight. Bold fonts survive a busy background. Thin fonts vanish.
- Contrast. Light text needs a dark outline or shadow. Dark text needs a light box behind it.
- Lines. Show one or two short lines at a time, not a paragraph.
Match the style to the video
Different videos need different looks.
| Video type | What works |
|---|---|
| Talking head, tips, explainers | Clean bold text, a highlight colour on the key word |
| Comedy and storytelling | Punchy words that pop in one at a time |
| Education and tutorials | Calm, clear text, steady position |
| Motivation and quotes | Large words, a strong colour, fewer words per screen |
| Music and lyrics | Words timed to the beat |
Use animation with care
Words that appear as they are spoken help people follow along. That is the main reason animated captions work. But too much movement makes people dizzy and hides the message.
- Keep the animation short and the same for the whole video.
- Highlight one word in a line, not every word.
- If a style makes you look away from the speaker, it is too busy.
Where to place the text
The middle-lower part of the screen is the most natural place for captions, but do not push them to the very bottom. Apps cover the bottom with the post caption and buttons. Use the safe zone guide to see what is covered, and test the result on your own phone before you post.
A simple checklist
- Can I read it in one second?
- Does it still read on a bright background and a dark one?
- Is it clear of the buttons and the post caption?
- Does the style match the video?
- Is it the same style as my last videos?
Stay consistent
Viewers start to recognise your look. Choose one or two styles and use them on every video, so your content feels like yours.
Pick a style in minutes
CapsField has many caption styles you can try on your own video, and you can change the font, size, colour and position of each. Try a style on your video and see it in the preview before you export.
