Many creators speak in Hindi or Urdu but write in English letters. It is how people type in comments, in messages and in captions: “kya haal hai”, “ye video dekho”. That style is called Hinglish, and it is often the best choice for Reels, because it is the way your audience reads on a phone.

The catch is that most caption tools were made for English. They either guess the words wrongly or write Hindi in Devanagari script that half your viewers do not read quickly. This guide shows how to get accurate Hinglish captions in a few minutes.

What Hinglish captions are

Hinglish captions write what you say in Roman (English) letters. If you say “aaj hum ek naya video banate hain”, the caption reads exactly that, not the Devanagari or the Urdu script version.

You may also hear it called Roman Hindi, Roman Urdu or Hinglish subtitles. Hindi and Urdu are spoken almost the same way, so the same Roman spelling works for both.

When to use Hinglish and when not to

Use Hinglish when:

  • your audience comments and chats in Roman letters
  • you mix Hindi or Urdu with English words in the same sentence
  • you want the captions to be quick to read on a small screen

Use native script (Devanagari for Hindi, Nastaliq for Urdu) when:

  • the video is formal, educational or for an older audience
  • you publish the same video on a platform where native script is the norm

Steps

  1. Upload your Reel to CapsField.
  2. Choose the spoken language: Hindi or Urdu, depending on how you speak.
  3. For the writing system, choose Roman / Hinglish.
  4. Run the transcription and read the result while the video plays.
  5. Fix names, brands and slang. These are the words an automatic tool is most likely to get wrong.
  6. Check the timing. Each word should appear when it is spoken. Drag the edges of a word or line if it is early or late.
  7. Choose a caption style, set the size and position, and export your Reel.

Spelling is a choice, not a rule

Roman Hindi has no single spelling. “Hai”, “hai” and “he” are all common. Pick one way for your own videos and keep it the same, so your captions look consistent.

Make them easy to read

  • Keep lines short. Two lines is the limit. Break the sentence where you would pause.
  • Use large, bold text. A thin font is hard to read on a phone in sunlight.
  • Add contrast. White text with a dark outline or shadow works on almost any background. A coloured highlight on the key word helps people follow the speaker.
  • Mind the bottom of the screen. Reels covers part of it with the caption and buttons. Turn on the safe zone guide while you place the text.

Common mistakes

  • Using Devanagari captions for an audience that reads Roman letters.
  • Spelling the same word three different ways in one video.
  • Showing a whole sentence at once. Words that appear as they are spoken keep people watching.
  • Never reading the result. A minute of fixing saves you from a wrong word on screen.
